Art can strengthen the mind, trains a child to concentrate for an extended period of time on one subject, and gives children a wholesome pastime that is pleasing to the eyes. Regular art lessons can help a child to develop a love for art and to stick with it! This can help a child to have a longer attention span, to learn to concentrate and to sit still. This is a very important point for children diagnosed with ADHD symptoms.
Art can really make a difference. It not only helps a child to learn to concentrate, but also helps to build self-esteem, which is something that can be lacking with children who have learning or other disabilities. Art can instill creativity and satisfy a child’s need for visual stimulation in a gentle way, at the same time, it can help to take the child’s attention away from TV, movies and video games, which may be part of the core reasons behind some children’s inability to focus, or that may be contributing to a child’s hyperactivity.
Art lessons can be an excellent investment in a child’s time. Trips to art galleries are a nice outing for children. Some public schools have murals which children and teenagers have painted or are painting on the school walls in the hallways. It is an application of the use of art in
the school system that is both positive and that enhances school morale. It is also a good project for children in special education, for children with special needs, to be involved with.
One college professor who herself deals with symptoms of ADHD states that the only place she feels really comfortable is in the art room. She states that the “disability” of ADHD, can be turned into a positive, if one channels it in the right direction.
Often times, children who are labeled ADHD are highly visual, and are visually oriented. When this is channeled positively towards art, then that liability turns into a positive and potential for creativity and productivity.

Art junction is described as a collaborative site for teachers and
students. It is a nice space for some details on teaching art to
children, including preschoolers, at various stages, of how to nurture
their creative ability, and som\e specifics on what materials
to use. Recommended. It has resources for both teachers, teens
and children as well as helpful links.
Something Different: www.youdraw.com is a website where you
can draw your own pictures on an electronic pad on the
computer, which are posted on the site. It is something children can
do to have their works get some kind of viewing audience. The
images are to be published in a book, so their drawings appear
in print, which also is something positive for children.

CFS Chronic fatigue syndrome is solitary of those ambiguous medical mystery upon which People who study this and doctors seem unable to reach agreement. A few say it is caused by a virus, others say it is allergy-related or a symptom of depression, and others, not knowing what to consider or say, insinuate it is all in the head. One detail is for sure; it brutally debilitates its victims.
On occasion, as medical information progresses, the understanding of a cycle of signs alterations. Infectious mononucleosis, termed the ?kissing sickness,? was the main sickness accepted as causing chronic fatigue. The signs were flu-like: Low-grade fever, muscular aches and pains, headache and fatigue. The most discouraging part of the sickness was that even if the person felt good for a while, the signs came back. It was not strange to have returning episodes of the sickness for two to three years.
In the mid 1980s as the AIDS plague spurred extensive inquiries into viruses, more became acknowledged about the mononucleosis syndrome. Mononucleosis became Chronic Epstein-Barr virus. A march 1988 article by a Center for Disease Control (CDC) working collection renamed it Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The CDC group furthermore outlined strict criteria for its diagnosis. To assemble their definition, a patient should suffer incapacitating fatigue for more than six months and ought to exhibit at least eight of eleven signs, counting sore throat, mild fever and muscle pains.
Why various lived through chronic fatigue and others do not, seems to be associated to their immune systems. It has been regular lived through that chronic fatigue syndrome occurs all through time as soon as the lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodiesis out of action by other illnesses, whether diagnosed or not.
The motive no one is able to fully explain how people get chronic fatigue syndrome is since so many things result chronic fatigue. Many, more situations, inadequacy and illnesses wear down and impair the immune system.
The symptoms of CFS are the signals of a poorly functioning lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodies. That is why, of none of the suggestions I render at this time work, your most excellent bet is to consult a nutritionally-oriented medical doctor or alternative medicine physician for the proper tests to detect, to decide by what exactly is causing your lymphocytes including the B cells and T cells, and antibodies to break down, and contract on a personal program to fill in your nutritional blanks.
A repot in the New England Journal of Medicine quotes Dr. Stephen Straus of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that chronic fatigue could characterize an abnormal response to infection. Scientists think a number of patients by no means completely recover from the flu, but as a substitute develop long-standing signs of chronic fatigue.
A research of 15 teenagers ages 13 to 17 diagnosed of having chronic fatigue syndrome found 11 reported their symptoms as following an acute sickness, according to physicians from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Children?s sickbay and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Seven had clear tests for mononucleosis. A third of the teenagers, all of whom were female, moreover were fond to be clinically depressed.

Modern medicine is based upon the notion of battle. We battle germs and fight for life. As soon as we feel pain or discomfort, we immediately try to stop it from happening and look for some way to soothe what we are going through. We feel we must change our illness or problems, overpower them with our expertise.
This orientation leads to a never ending battle with all that impinges upon us. After one illness or problem is conquered, another arises. We live in a state of constant insecurity where there is little room for ease of mind.
Healing from within brings inner peace with it. It arises from a different orientation towards all the experiences of life. We are taught to stop, pay attention and respect all that comes to us. It is as if we were re-focusing a camera, receiving our experience through a different lens.
Usually there is a deep sense that pain is bad, and must be removed at any cost. Pain is not bad. Pain arises from lack of balance and contains much information. It brings many messages along with it. When we see our pain as a messenger and learn how to respect and listen to it, healing begins in all kinds of ways.
The first step in healing from within is to learn how to see pain as an ally, to learn how to “dialogue” with it. For most of us this seems almost unthinkable.
At first this requires a complete turn around. Instead of tensing up and gearing for battle, we learn how to pause and understand there is a lesson that we have to learn. When we do this we find the pain or problem often comes holding a gift in its hands.
Illness often comes when we feel defeated. We may not wish to struggle anymore. Some people become ill when they are overly exhausted. The illness is the only way they can give themselves permission to stop, rest, and make much needed changes in their lives. Each illness has it’s own story. The same is true with psychological or personal problems that grow strong, demanding our attention.
When someone is in physical pain and suddenly understands what is troubling them, the physical pain often subsides. For full healing to take place it may be essential to make changes in one’s total life. Cancer can be suppressed for many years, and then it returns. When it reappears we must ask, “Why not? What is going on in my total life?”
“We become sick becomes we act in sickening ways,”
Louis Jourard
We are all experts at brushing things under the carpet. Then the carpet begins to roll up at the corners, and we feel we are coming unglued. During illness the body is rebelling. It is demanding that we pay attention to all that has been unattended. We may have been pushing ourselves for too long. Now our body is fed up. Stop and listen to me, it pleads. When we learn how to listen and how to reply, an entirely new life begins. Then pain and illness become an opportunity for vital change.
Learning To Listen
We usually listen only to part of ourselves. The rest is rejected. But no matter what we are rejecting, soon or later we must come up against it and face it straight on.
Rejecting something over and over never makes it go away. In fact, it will come back time and again, just for you to accept it. Everything needs to be loved and accepted, including our illness and pain. The best way is to make friends with the pain. Fighting intensifies it. If we can relax into it for a little while and explore it, many possibilities arise. Natural healing is always available in all situations, but it can be cut off by fighting and fear. When we let go, and allow ourselves to speak to the pain, and to listen to what it has to say, incredible changes can happen.
To do this, we simply close our eyes, stop fighting, and ask our pain what it is saying to us, what does it need from us right now? Then we become very quiet and listen deeply. An answer may not come right away. Patience is needed. As we do this process over and over, fear diminishes and we begin to hear.
Answers come in different ways. Some hear answers within. Others see images, some have dreams. We learn to be open to all that comes and in this openness, we learn.
Exercise
Look at your illness or problem now. Picture it within and give it some kind of shape. What does it look like to you? Describe or draw it. Now, look more deeply at what the image really means. What is this image saying to you about yourself and the life you are leading? Listen carefully.
Next, ask the image any questions you may have and let it answer you. (Ask what it wants from you and what it would need to go away). See if you can give it what it needs.
This attitude is called making friends with the pain. When we do this illness does not become something foreign and frightening. We become better able to understanding what the true causes are.
For example, if we are sad for too long and have not done enough crying, our bodies may begin to cry for us through the illness we are going through. If we feel that life is meaningless, our bodies can start to express this by shriveling up and dying. If we have held onto difficult attitudes, our bodies will bear the burden of them. Persistent negative attitudes become wounds upon our entire selves.
Our attitudes are messages we give our body. Though we may not be aware of it, if we feel life is a dirty battle, we are telling our body to tense up with shame all day long. Once we begin the crucial work of taking responsibility for and changing our attitudes, our entire body can begin to experience on-going ease instead of dis-ease. We must look at the basic attitudes we live with and ask ourselves if they are conducive to our health, or do they contain the very seeds of pain?
In order to heal from within, it is essential to handle these long standing patterns, to see them and change them to attitudes and patterns that are productive of well-being. Health comes with learning to say “yes” to all of our experience, in being willing to experience it just as it is. Wellness emerges out of the balance and harmony of all parts of ourselves.
When we are well, we feel whole, accepting and in harmony with ourselves and the entire world we live in. Like a fresh water stream flowing, this state of being brings continual refreshment and healing day by day.

The man was worried. His frail, elderly, widowed mother had been complaining of chest pains, and tingling and numbness in her left arm. These were classic signs, he knew, of serious heart problems. He didn’t want to alarm her, so he didn’t say, “Mom, you may have had a heart attack!” But he did convince her to see her doctor.
It was a new, young doctor, assigned to her by the HMO. “He was so nice,” Mom told her son later. “He told me all about his family, showed me pictures of his kids . . .”
“What did he say about you, Mom?”
“He gave me a little check-over, said I was fine.”
“Did you tell him about the pains and the numbness?”
“No, he was so busy, he had to go, I didn’t want to bother him. I’m sure he would tell me if there was something really wrong.”
The story illustrates vividly so much of what is wrong at the core of health care. The woman is in imminent danger of death from myocardial infarction, and she is not getting the treatment that could save her. As usual when a problem is systemic, asking, “Who’s to blame?” leads to fingers pointing in every direction. Was the son to blame, for withholding vital information out of concern for her feelings? Was the HMO to blame, for switching her to a new doctor, and for pressuring the doctors to spend too little time with each patient? Was the doctor to blame, for not asking more probing questions? Was the old woman to blame, for assuming the doctor had psychic powers to determine her health without full information?
Flipped over, the story gives us an outline of what we might hope for — what we might aim at — in the health care team of the future.
The Health care Team Of The Future
The health care team of the future will be:
1) Inclusive: It will involve not only the doctor and the patient, but the nurse, the patient’s “health coach,” as well as medical specialists, nutritionists and other experts when necessary, and — just as important — the patient’s family.
2) Collaborative: Everyone on the team has a role. The doctor becomes more of a “chief medical advisor.” Final judgment rests with the patient and the patient’s family.
3) Long-term: Today’s medicine is almost entirely about acute episodes. But most health and disease happens over a lifetime, not in a moment of crisis. Trauma happens in a moment: A gunshot, a car wreck. But even trauma is usually a result of lifestyles, habits, addictions, and environments that extend over years and decades. The most effective health care is framed by long-term relationships.
4) Information-rich: Those relationships will be flooded not only by information, but information targeted to this particular patient and situation.
What’s Driving It That Way
This is more than a fantasy. Four powerful forces combine to make this dream team both necessary and possible.
1) Dissatisfaction: From rising costs to the second-guessing by HMO bureaucrats to the flood of paperwork, almost every detail of our current system leaves both practitioners and customers feeling enraged and impotent. You can find happy individuals, but no group, no profession, no industry involved in today’s health care can be said to be well served and satisfied.
2) Demographics: As the Boomers age and the ranks of the aged grow, the ranks of clinicians will shrink — demanding an entirely new and more efficient relationship between the two.
3) Information technology: The Internet and “just-in-time” medical information systems allow both clinicians and patients unprecedented access to information — and unprecedented ability to sort the information for what is relevant and useful.
4) Genomics: Then information contained in your personal genome will grant an entirely new and powerful ability to prevent major diseases from developing — but this information would be of far less help in our current system, which waits for acute episodes. Genomic medicine demands a long-term framework.
What Gets In The Way
Economics and mythology combine to throttle the development of this new health care team.
Most of today’s health care operates on a managed-care business model that pays doctors for high throughput of acute episodes and penalizes them for building long-term relationships, asking probing questions, and establishing a full picture of what lies under the surface. The same business model penalizes patients for any contact with the health care system, and (in practical terms) forbids the kinds of classes, groups, informal visits, and long conversations that could form the basis of long-term, non-acute relationships.
The mythology of the doctor as soap-opera hero, from “Dr. Kildare,” “Ben Casey,” and “Marcus Welby, M.D.” to “ER” and “Chicago Hope,” bolsters and repeats the image of doctor as semi-divine keeper of information and judgment. Most students in medical-school boot camp, even now, are trained in a crisis-oriented intensive model that gives little or no place to the arc of a lifetime, the relationship with a whole person, the involvement of a whole team.
What About You?
How do you start to create it yourself? Rather than wait for it to be created? By holding up a mirror to yourself. As a doctor, a patient, a nurse, a family member, when it comes to health and health care, who do I want to see in the mirror?
We already know that you have taken one step: You’re here on HealthCentral.com. That means automatically that you are more curious, more interested, more ready than most to create your own future.
As a patient, this is just what is required: Educate yourself, ask questions, be a squeaky wheel, demand that your doctor and other clinicians build that kind of active, involved relationship with you.
If you are a doctor, give patients the space to be involved and curious. Carve out the time and energy to have a relationship with each patient. Don’t take the role of medical judgment until it is thrust on you. Invite collaboration from nurses and other colleagues. Make use of their judgment and observations.
As kin of a patient, be open with information and support. Be a listener. Be assertive, if necessary, in running interference with the system for an elderly or sick relative. Get involved and stay involved.
As a nurse, build collaboration with fellow nurses and with any physician that provides an opening — and let the others know that is what you expect.
As an executive at an HMO or insurance provider, take a long look at the true costs of interfering in medical decisions, and of paying only for acute interventions, rather than prevention, education, and long-term collaborative management. Take a new look at the policies and orientation of organizations with a much lower “churn rate” (percentage of customers who don’t re-up each year) than yours, such as Kaiser and Group Health of Puget Sound.
Policy changes, legislation, and new, creative ways of doing business all will make a difference. But none will have the revolutionary force of changed attitudes and new behaviors. Become the person that you would like to have on your health care team.
